Wi-Fi Protected Setup or WPS can be a little complicated thing to understand if we do not get the basics right. Today we are going to discuss the overview of WPS, how to set up it, how does it work and some Wi-Fi settings as well. So, Lets get Started.
An Overview about Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS)
As explained by wikipedia, its primary function is to make your wireless home network secure i.e it works as a security standard for your Wi-Fi Network. Let’s understand this with an example, You setup a Wireless Internet Connection at your home, now you want two thing, first it should have some security so that the anonymous user can’t access it and secondly, you should easily add your devices like iPad, iPhone easily without any hiccups. It was created almost a decade ago by Wi-Fi alliance.
Some serious issues were found in December 2011 when the system was easily targeted by Bruce Force attack. This happened because of the PIN feature vulnerability with the wireless routers. Anyway, that is not the case now as all the flaws have been solved.
Please Note – We do not recommend you to use WPS as it is not secured. This is for the people who are still using the old router.

Wi-Fi Protected Setup – How it Works?
There are 3 ways to set up a wireless network, first is PIN entry which is mandatory to connect any device within the range. The second and third are NFC (Near Field Communication) and Push Button respectively. Some devices come with NFC like blackberry phones and some come with Push Button option. Push Button is an easy method to connect a device like iPad, Cell Phone with the router by pressing the a button present of both the devices.
Among all three methods, the last two are optional. You need to choose either NFC or PBC to connect your device to a router. NFC is considered as the best among all as it has strong security. It protects the unintended device to connect to your router.
How to Setup your Wi-Fi Router to Connect your Devices?
Note: The method may vary for netgear router, linksys router or any other router. This is just an overview of the things.
Step 1# – Using WPS: It’s easy. You need to make sure that your router is receiving electricity and It’s LED is ON. Now, check the configuration of your device which you want to connect. Most devices come with pre-installed WPS. Now, search for the WPS button given on the router (in side) and push it.
Step 2# – Open internet explorer and Enter 192.168 .1.1 on the address bar. Now, you’ ll see a pop up asking for username and password.
For Linksys Routers
Username = blank and Password = admin
For Netgear Router
Username = username and Password = password
Now, Click on the Wi-Fi Protected Setup from the router’s software menu and enter your PIN (given at the back of router) and click Ok.
In case you see this message, Connection Failure! Your client device failed to connect to the network. Refer back to your client device for further instructions. Press “OK” to continue. Then, contact your service provider.
Wrapping it Up –
It is suggested to use WPA2 for your wireless connectivity as it has better security. So use WPA2 and disable the WPS (if your router has this option) to connect your router with your devices. The softwares like “reaver” have made the even more insecure to use WPS as it easily crack the PIN.
